J. TODD BENSON
Todd is a 1995 graduate of the Paul M. Hebert Law Center at Louisiana State University, where he finished near the top of his class, earning Order of the Coif honors. Following his graduation, he was inducted into the Paul M. Hebert Law Center Hall of Fame. Prior to graduation, he was a Member of the Louisiana Law Review and a published author. In addition, he earned an academic scholarship while in law school and served as a Research Assistant to Professor Jay S. Bybee, who is now a sitting judge on the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit.
After graduation from law school, Todd served as a law clerk to Chief Justice Catherine D. Kimball at the Louisiana Supreme Court for one year. He has practiced law since August of 1996, including a brief stint as General Counsel for Tango Transport, Inc., a large trucking company. Todd also formerly practiced with Cook, Yancey, King and Galloway.
Todd is a trial lawyer. He has tried jury trials in the United States District Court for the Western District of Louisiana, the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Texas, the United States District Court for the Middle District of Tennessee, numerous Louisiana state courts, and Arkansas courts. He has successfully prosecuted and argued appeals in the United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit, the Louisiana Supreme Court, and the Louisiana intermediate appellate courts.
In April of 2008, Todd obtained for his client one of the largest punitive damage awards for an individual plaintiff against an individual defendant ever awarded in the United States District Court for the Western District of Louisiana.
Todd is admitted to practice before the United States Supreme Court, in the United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit, the United States District Court for the Western District of Louisiana, the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Louisiana, the United States District Court of the Middle District of Louisiana, the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Texas, the United States Bankruptcy Court for the Western District of Louisiana, Louisiana state courts, and Texas state courts.
